Ruins and Prospects
A Journal of The Plague Year

Dangling between solid and fragile, scars and bullet holes, ruins and reconstruction, I attempt to construct and showcase from the soft materials the extreme contrast: the cloth’s tearing and sticking, breaking and mending. My new series of works, Ruins and Prospects, transforms the scene of the house under the real wars. The layered beige cloth, mended and fragmented, is a home bastion, somewhat dilapidated and somewhat fragile.

I focused on slices of consciousness that have been buried, disembodied, fractured, and cut. Over the course of a woman’s growth, perhaps one can say that breaking the bonds of stereotypes is a ceaseless revolution. Along that road, we gather precious articles that had fallen to the ground. And that indestructible life force and full-scale preservation are the foundation for happiness and strength.

There are symbolic figures along with graffiti which are unconsciously made, classic texts from the fairy tale and visual language of abstraction through the powerful materiality. In the series Survivor, it represents simple and unadorned scenes of children and their families. I turn the reels of thread originally caused by embroidery layer upon layer in the backs into the fronts of the works, and deliberately creating intense traces.

In the series of How Brave, the characters and themes are apparently the ones with which we feel quite familiar. However, it is not what it appears: the innocent face of the princess unknowingly evokes the senses of ugliness and anxiety. Through the ambivalent and paradoxical images of princess, I attempt to peel, step by step, the different personae of all works of life.
